When life gives you lemons...

You know the feeling. Life seems to hit you with one blow after another — jab, jab, uppercut. Then suddenly it’s an avalanche: uppercut, uppercut, uppercut.

We’ve all heard the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” So with the best intentions, we tell ourselves, “I’ll take control of my situation and make it work for me.” But lemons are sour. And if we’re not careful, life’s hardships can leave us sour too. Hurt can turn into bitterness, and bitterness can lead us down unhealthy paths and poor choices. In this series, we’ll explore the story of someone in the Bible who had every reason to become bitter — but didn’t. Together, we’ll uncover the attitude and posture that enabled them to handle life’s lemons in a healthy, God-honouring way.

Exploration:

What does it mean to create space for people to ask life’s biggest questions? Questions about purpose, meaning, faith, doubt—even life and death itself.

Over the next three weeks, our new series Exploration is all about becoming that kind of people. We want Maylands to be a place where curiosity is welcomed, questions are taken seriously, and no one feels they need to have everything figured out before they belong.

Whether someone is just beginning to consider faith, returning after time away, or wanting to go deeper in following Jesus, we want to be our community to be one that that listens well, walks patiently, and explores together.

Join us as we learn how to make room—for questions, for conversations, and for one another.

New Title

Jesus' relationship with his audience provides insight into his mission. As we read the gospels we not only find the events of Christ’s life and ministry but also how people responded to them. Specifically the reaction of the crowds are an important part of the story. In reading these scriptures we join that audience. In fact, their reactions are an invitation for our self-examination and challenge our understanding of what Jesus came to do.

Join us for a two part sermon series that explores this dynamic and provides deeper understanding of who God is, and what it means to be called into freedom and fullness.

Hands, Hope, & Harvest

"You are the salt of the earth"
"You are the light of the world"
"They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world."

With these 3 statements, it was clear that Jesus always intended his Church to exist in the context of an existing worldly culture. The Church has always had to prayerfully navigate God-honouring ways of adapting to the ever-changing culture so that followers of Jesus could be "in the world and not of the world." It can be very easy to get caught and swept into the wave of cultural shifts. As followers of Jesus, it's important we do our best to move forward in ways that honour God. Join us in this next series as we look at some "handles" to grip to during societal shifts.

Grace, goodness, and gratitude

Join us this month as we explore what it truly means to share the good news of Jesus. Not as a pressure-filled task, but as a natural outflow of a life transformed by grace. This three-week series will help break down some of the misconceptions around evangelism, shifting the focus from performance to presence, and from striving to Spirit-empowered witness.

Sharing good news is a natural response to receiving it, we’re called to be witnesses empowered by the Holy Spirit, not convincers, and being a bearer of good news begins with simply being with God. Come be encouraged and equipped as we grow together as bearers of the best news the world could ever hear.

In this new series, we’ll look at how Jesus used parables to reveal deep truth and invite people into God’s bigger story. At the same time, we’ll discover how sharing our own stories can be one of the most powerful ways to witness, worship, and wonder together at the hope we’ve found in Him.

10 Year Celebrations - May 2025

It's pretty incredible to realise that 2025 marks 10 years since Maylands Church re-planted a congregation at 41 Eighth Avenue. We are planning to celebrate and thank God throughout the month of May for this milestone.

February Sermon Series

The oft used joke in church circles is that when you don’t know the answer to a biblical or theological question, just answer “Jesus”. The reason is simple: at the end of the day, Jesus is the central person of the Bible and Christian faith; all things lead back to Jesus (hence a safe answer!).

Keeping Jesus at the centre of a person’s life is the primary focus of anyone who follows Him. So the tendency is to live according to the following: “The more I learn about Jesus, the more I can make him the centre of my life.” Join us for our next series as we refine that sentiment to one that is more freeing and fulfilling: “The more I know Jesus, the more He becomes the centre of my life”

Discipleship is often framed around “doing stuff” — praying, reading the Bible, serving… These are all good and necessary things, but resting is also an important (and regularly overlooked) part of discipleship.

At Maylands, we want to emphasize the importance of resting in God. We do this by using Calibration Sundays to practice the spiritual discipline rest, also known as the Sabbath. This is a dedicated day to rest spiritually, lean on Him for renewal and enjoy His goodness in the quiet - all so that we can be ready to engage in what's ahead.
